I've been writing Rails applications for over 20 years. Each version change requires some work. When I lost my ability to deploy new version to ptgolf.us, I decided to upgrade to Rails 8 and started to work on the new version. That was almost 2 years ago! I worked on it occasionally. It's now time to move to the new version.
I created a new Rail 8 application. I then created new models(Groups, Players, Games etc.) and imported data to them. I also imported most of the views. I also left off a bunch of junk that was never used.
I tried to get the groups to take a look at the new version I deployed to a staging server, but never got any feedback. The ptgolf.us server costs me $25 a month to keep up. It also housed a couple of VFW Post 8600 sites that are no longer used. My new plan was to move it to a smaller server.
Look and Feel
It looks a little different! There was way too much green. I changed the tables to use alternate green/white rows.
The new version is much more responsive in that more views work on a phone.
The 3 column Create New Game has moved to 2 columns that wrap on a phone.
Authorization
Authorization controls who can do what. You have to be logged in to make any changes. Some people have more privileges than others, based on a Roles. I'm using a new version of that I've streamlined that a little. There are five roles. [super trustee manager admin member]
A super user (me) can do anything. It create new Groups, login to different groups if needed to fixed something.
A trustee can do everything a super user can do except changing any super users settings.
A manager(Sheriff!) can do anything to any models owned by the group.
Admin - can do everything a manager can do except changing managers and up settings.
A member can look!
I'm sure there more subtle changes that I have not addressed, but I'm tired of writing, so go look for yourself. Might also want to look at
